Housing Choice Voucher Program
Section 8, also known as the Housing Choice Voucher Program, provides funding for rent subsidies for eligible low and very low-income families, the elderly, and disabled to afford safe, decent, sanitary and affordable housing in the private market. Families can select housing within a neighborhood of their choice from a landlord willing to participate in the program. Since housing assistance is provided on behalf of the family or individual, participants are able to find their own housing, including single family homes, townhouses, and apartments. Rent subsidies (vouchers) allow families to pay a reasonable share of their income toward rent while the program, within specific limits, makes up the difference.
